Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Farmingdale State
Rams women's soccer team fell to 16th ranked Calvin College, 5-0,
on Friday afternoon on a rain-soaked Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids,
Michigan. This was the first game of the Rams three-day trip to
Michigan, the first-ever time the team is traveling by plane for a
regular season game.
Farmingdale State held Calvin scoreless up until the final 10
minutes of the opening period, when Sophomore Kellie Honderd
(Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) opened the scoring with a shot
from the left wing after receiving a lead pass from sophomore
Stephanie Malburg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern).
Honderd then set up senior Michelle Koele (Denver, Col./Denver
Christian) for a goal with just over three minutes left in the
half, allowing the Knights to a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Honderd struck again nine minutes into the second half. Moments
later, sophomore Mindy Capisciolto (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity
Christian) scored off a free from senior Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley
Park, Ill./Victor J. Andrew). With time ticking down, Ribbens set
up senior Liz VanRees (Muskegon, Mich./Western Michigan Christian)
for a shot from the right wing that VanRees blasted into the top
shelf.
Ranked 16th in the most recent Division III Top 25 poll, Calvin
(3-1-1 overall) outshot Farmingdale State (2-4) 28-1 with junior
goalkeepers Alyssa Bergsma (Walker, Mich./Calvin Christian) and
Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, Miss./Whitfield) combining on the
shutout.
The Rams will face Hope College tomorrow, Saturday, September
13th, in a non-conference game at Noon.
