Women's Soccer Ends in a Tie Against Staten Island

NEWARK, NJ The women's soccer team traveled to Rutgers-Newark to face the College of Staten Island in the first round of the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Friday night. Farmingdale scored goals less than four minutes apart from freshman midfielder Christina Cascio (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) and freshman midfielder Janelle Reif (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks) to go up 2-0 in the 37th minute. The goals were assisted by junior defender Angela Barea (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) and freshman midfielder Tricia Pickford (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa).

Dolphin senior midfielder Daniella Otaiza (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) scored the final two goals of the match to push the contest into overtime. Her goal on an assist from Lauren Baydal (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) in the 42nd minute trimmed the Rams lead to 2-1 at the half before she took a lead from senior forward Burkurije Begai (Staten Island, NY/Susan Wagner) and scored with less than seven minutes left in regulation play.

Farmingdale State outshot the Dolphins 25-6 overall, including a hefty 8-1 edge in the two 10-minute overtime periods, but sophomore goalkeeper Tina Bellocchio (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) made nine saves to keep Staten Island in the fray. Rams goalkeeper Kimberly Sontag (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) finished the game with three saves.

Farmingdale State (0-1-2) advanced to the championship match via a coin flip following the tie. Staten Island and St. Elizabeth will play the consolation match at 2 p.m. on Alumni Field with the women's championship contest set for 7 o'clock, following the men's title game. It's Rutgers-Newark against Farmingdale State in both brackets after each men's team posted wins in their tournament openers.

In the other contest, Junior midfielder Alison Phillips (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional HS) had two goals and two assists in just 28 minutes to lead Rutgers-Newark past undermanned St. Elizabeth, 6-0, and into the title match of the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic against Farmingdale State.

Sophomore forwards Jess Sapienza (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Erin Marshall (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) chipped in a goal and assist each for the Raiders (2-1). Freshmen Karen Johnson (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) and Pam Capasso (Woodbury, NJ/Gateway Regional) netted the other Rutgers-Newark goals.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) chalked up her school-record 11th career shutout without having to stop a shot.
