Defense Leads Rams Past Polytechnic
Farmingdale State - 72, Polytechnic - 51
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State women's basketball team forced 27 turnovers to defeat conference opponent Polytechnic 72-51 this evening. The Rams won their 12th game in the last 13 outings, improving to 12-4 on the season, 10-1 in Skyline play, while Polytechnic fell to 6-8, 4-5 in the conference.
In the first half, both offenses started slowly and Polytechnic held an 11-10 advantage at the 9:49 mark, after freshman forward Margaux Pickell (Howell, N.J.) hit the open jumper. Farmingdale State answered with a 7-0 run spanning the next 2:51, opening up a six point lead. The Rams would extend the lead, holding a 34-23 advantage at halftime.
In the second, the Rams would pull away opening up a 20 point lead only eight minutes in the half. Farmingdale State would go on to win by 21, holding the Fighting Blue Jays to only 51 points.
The Rams were led by junior guard Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) who scored a team-high 22 points, had seven rebounds and a game-high six blocks. Blakney shot an impressive 73 percent from the field and was 3-for-4 from three-point range. Junior forward Gabrielle Green (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds for the Rams, while junior guard Kamaya Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) led the team with five steals.
Pickell led Polytechnic scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing 16 rebounds, 13 from the defensive end. She shot 8-for-16 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the free-throw line.
Farmingdale State will host Sage on Saturday, January 31st and 3:00pm.
