Blakney Hits 500 but Rams Win Streak is Snapped

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Sophomore guard Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) scored 25 points to set her career point total at 509, but Farmingdale State (6-3) fell in double overtime, 88-79, to visiting Rutgers-Newark (8-2) today in a non-conference women's basketball game in Farmingdale, N.Y.

The Rams held a one point lead with 0.6 seconds remaining in regulation, but Rutgers junior guard Bimpe Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, N.Y./Parsippany Hills) stole the inbounds pass and was fouled on her layup attempt. She was able to hit one of her free throws to tie the game at 65-65 and send the game into overtime.

Rutgers built a quick seven point lead in the first overtime, before Blakney scored the Rams next eight points, including a three-point play with 15 seconds left, to tie the game at 75-75 and force a second overtime period.

In the second overtime, Rutgers was able to break away and outscore Farmingdale 13-4 and take the eventual victory for their eighth win of the season and breaking the Rams' five-game win streak.

Blakney led for Farmingdale with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center Mercedes Miller (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) scored 17 points with 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Kamaya Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood) finished with 11 points.

Sophomore forward Ihdhira Cabrera (West New York, N.J./Memorial) led for Rutgers with 15 points, while Courtney Vacca (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) led the rebounding with 10.

Farmingdale State will be on break for the holidays and will return to action on January 8th for a Skyline Conference game at Bard College at 6:00 p.m.
