Farmingdale State - 85, New Jersey City - 77 (2OT)
Jersey City, N.J. - The Farmingdale State women's
basketball team improved to 2-2 with an 85-77 double-overtime
victory over New Jersey City University (1-4) on Wednesday night in
Jersey City, N.J. Senior center Mercedes Miller (New York,
N.Y./Manhattan Center) led the Rams with 29 points and 12 rebounds,
her 2nd double-double of the season. Farmingdale now leads the
all-time series 5-2 over the Gothic Knights.
The Rams trailed by three at the half, 34-31. Following the seventh tie of the first two periods, it was 52-52 with 6:52 remaining. Seven quick points helped NJCU build a six-point, 59-53 lead, with 5:37 left and a three-pointer by NJCU sophomore guard Fatia Whitsett (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) with 4:15 left maintained a five-point, 62-57 edge. But Farmingdale outscored NJCU 9-4 down the stretch to force the first overtime. With both teams even again at 73-73, it would force a double OT and Farmingdale took advantage of four NJCU starters fouling out to open up a 12-4 edge for the eventual win.
Sophomore guard Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) registered her first double-double of the year with 26 points and 10 rebounds. She also finished with five steals, four assists and two blocks. Senior guard Dankery Perez (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) led the Rams with five assists.
