Farmingdale, NY - Farmingdale State defeated visiting Baruch College (1-2) tonight in the season opener at the Lynch Sports Center in Farmingdale, NY. The Rams forced three crucial turnovers in the final minute of play and sunk seven free throws for the 83-81 victory and to improve their record to 1-0.

After trailing 42-41 at the half, the Rams used a 12-point run with 6:28 remaining in the game to cut the lead to two, 64-66, with five minutes left to play. The teams traded baskets until there was 57 seconds left when junior Christine Daley (Elmont, NY/Elmont) stole the ball from Baruch's Ally Stamatiades (Astoria, NY/William C. Bryant) and gave Farmingdale the first and final lead with a fast break layup to make it 74-72. Junior Mercedes Miller (New York, NY/Manhattan Center) added another quick basket for the Rams to push the lead to four.

With an 81-78 lead with seven seconds to go, junior Dankery Perez (New York, NY/Manhattan Center) stole the ball on the inbounds and was fouled. She sank both shots for the 83-78 lead. Baruch hit a final second three-pointer but it wouldn't be enough and the final score would stand 83-81.

For Farmingdale State, Miller finished with a team-high of 20 points and 14 rebounds. Daley tallied 19 points. Perez finished with 10 points and five assists. Senior Rochelle Clark (Bellport, NY/Bellport) had game-highs of seven assists and eight steals along with six points. Freshman Tiffara Steward (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) hit four free-throws in the last 14 seconds and finished with seven points.

The Rams will resume play at the Russell Sage Tournament to face Green Mountain on Friday, December 1st at 6:00pm.
