#1 Farmingdale State - 2, #4 Mount Saint Vincent - 0
Farmingdale, N.Y. - Top-seeded Farmingdale State defeated #4 Mount Saint Vincent, 2-0, in their first game of the double-elimination portion of the Skyline Conference Softball Championship this afternoon. The Rams next will play #2 St. Joseph's-Long Island in the first game tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
After FSC (18-15) sophomore pitcher Madeleine Smith (San Diego, Calif.) and Dolphins' (16-21) junior pitcher Hannah Thompson (Vacaville, Calif.) each faced the minimum number of batters through the first three and a half innings, the Rams opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sophomore left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) led off with a walk and was quickly moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.). Freshman shortstop Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) batted next and hit an RBI triple to right-center to put the Rams in front, 1-0. Farmingdale State junior first baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Clark and put FSC on top, 2-0.
Still trailing 2-0 with two outs in the top of the seventh, Mount Saint Vincent loaded the bases with three straight singles but Smith would force the next batter to ground out to third base to end the game and secure Farmingdale State's 2-0 victory.
Clark finished 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and one run scored, while Collard tallied a hit, a walk and one run scored. Lombardo drove in one run in the win.
Smith tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits, to improve to 8-5 on the season.
For CMSV, junior second baseman Sophia Herrera (San Diego, Calif.) and senior third baseman Deanna Nardi (Roseville, Calif.) each tallied two hits in the loss.
