Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team cruised past non-conference opponent John Jay in a doubleheader this afternoon. The Rams won game one 10-2 in six innings and earned a 9-1 victory in the second. With the wins, FSC improved to an even 12-12 on the season.
After the Bloodhounds (6-12) were held scoreless in the top of the first by Farmingdale State senior pitcher Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.), FSC tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. With runners on second and third, freshman shortstop Jessica Clark (Selden, N.Y.) tallied an RBI groundout before junior first baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage.
Trailing 3-0, John Jay scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to cut their deficit to just one.
The Rams responded with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the 10-2 run-rule victory. After freshman second baseman Julianna Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.) led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on a wild pitch to put FSC ahead 4-2, senior right fielder Aleysha Midgett (Brentwood, N.Y.) and sophomore left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) hit back-to-back RBI singles. FSC added runs on an error and a walk before a two-run single by Prescia gave the Rams the 10-2 win.
Prescia finished with two hits, a triple, two RBI's and one run scored, while Lombardo went 1-for-2 with a triple, one walk and a game-high three runs batted in. Freshman center fielder Priscilla Rivera (Brentwood, N.Y.) produced three hits and three runs scored and both Cardenales and L. Collard added two hits apiece in the victory.
J. Collard (W, 6-5) earned her sixth win of the season after tossing a complete game, striking out three and allowing just one earned.
Bloodhounds' junior center fielder Jessica Barbaria (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman designated player Ashley Scalfani (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each went 2-for-3 in the loss.
Farmingdale State trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning of game two before a two-out double from junior catcher Courtney Ludewig (Bethpage, N.Y.) and two wild pitches allowed the Rams to tie the game at 1-1.
FSC took the lead in the third inning as freshman first baseman Sabrina Snyder (Brentwood, N.Y.) hit a triple to right center and later scored on a passed ball.
Leading 5-1 after scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, Farmingdale State loaded the bases with two outs and used an RBI single by Snyder and a two-run single from sophomore shortstop Amaris Negron (Central Islip, N.Y.) to go in front, 8-1.
FSC added their final run in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out RBI double by freshman center fielder Mirren O'Mahony (Massapequa, N.Y.) to score sophomore third baseman Kayla Nuñez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and give Farmingdale State the 9-1 run-rule win.
Snyder, Ludewig and junior second baseman Cathleen Cassese (Bethpage, N.Y.) each had two hits and two runs scored in game two, while Negron was 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a walk.
Junior pitcher Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) (W, 3-2) picked up the win as she threw five innings of one-run ball and struck out a career-high nine batters.
Farmingdale State next hosts Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's-Long Island on Saturday, April 13th at noon on Senior Day.
