Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team picked up a pair of run-rule victories today as they recorded 10-2 and 12-3 wins against Skyline opponent Purchase College. With the wins, the Rams improved to 12-12 overall and 8-0 in conference play, while the Panthers fell to 5-11, 3-7.
FSC scored two runs in the first inning of game one on an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Jessica Lombardo (Levittown, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Sierra Cardenales (Patchogue, N.Y.).
After scoring a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a groundout in the bottom of the second, Lombardo hit an RBI triple and Cardenales followed with an RBI single to give the Rams a 6-0 lead at the end of two innings.
Leading 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Farmingdale State would score four runs as junior right fielder Alexa Luna (Stuart, Fla.), Lombardo, Cardenales and sophomore catcher Kimberly Basile (Levittown, N.Y.) each drove in a run en route to the run-rule victory, 10-2.
Lombardo led the way for the Rams with three hits, three RBI's and three runs scored, while Cardenales registered two hits and three runs batted in. Basile was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, freshman left fielder Lexie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored and Luna ended 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.
Junior Jaxie Collard (Deer Park, N.Y.) (7-4) earned the win after tossing a complete game, allowing two unearned runs and striking out five.
Purchase senior shortstop Victoria Capone-Froio (Yonkers, N.Y.) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.
Trailing 1-0 after one half inning in game two, FSC scored a run in the bottom of the first and three more in the second, highlighted by a L. Collard two-run double, to go ahead 4-1.
After a scoreless third, Purchase would hit a pair of two-out RBI singles in the top of the fourth to close within just one, 4-3. Farmingdale State would answer by recording eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 12-3 advantage. Luna and Lombardo each produced RBI doubles and freshman second baseman Amaris Negron (Central Islip, N.Y.) hit a two-run triple in the inning.
In the top of the fifth, the first two Panthers would reach base safely but sophomore Julia Walpole (Mahopac, N.Y.) would force a double play and a ground out to secure the 12-3 run-rule win.
Negron was a perfect 3-for-3 in game two with a pair of RBI's and three runs scored, while Lombardo and Cardenales each tallied two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Luna finished 2-for-2 with three RBI's and two runs scored and L. Collard recorded two hits and two RBI's in the win.
Walpole earned the game two victory, pitching a complete game and striking out two to improve her overall record to 5-2 on the season.
For Purchase, senior first baseman Antonina Fiore (Mount Sinai, N.Y.), junior right fielder Daniella Edelson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and junior left fielder Lisa Kentris (Latham, N.Y.) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
The Rams next host non-conference opponent Stockton for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 19th starting at 3:00 p.m.
