Late Comeback Leads St. Joe's to Split with Rams

Patchogue, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team split a Skyline doubleheader at St. Joseph's on Sunday. The Rams won the first game 7-3, before a Golden Eagles comeback led them to a 7-6 victory in game two.

In the top of the third, junior center fielder Michelle Mongiello (Elmont, N.Y.) put Farmingdale State (12-10, 5-3) ahead 2-0 with a 2 RBI single to center. Two batters later, freshman third baseman Andrea Klarman (Medford, N.Y.) connected on a grand slam to left which put the Rams on top 6-0.

After St. Joe's (16-8, 8-3) closed within four, 6-2, Mongiello hit an RBI double to center field in the sixth to increase the lead to five.

The Rams allowed a run in the bottom of the seventh but earned a 7-3 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Sophomore catcher Meagan Anderson (Patchogue, N.Y.) was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored, while freshman first baseman Lori Michalowski (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) batted 3-for-4. Mongiello had three hits, a run scored and 3 RBI and Klarman was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a run scored.

Junior pitcher Taylor Webb (West Babylon, N.Y.) improved to 7-3 on the year after throwing a complete game allowing two earned runs and striking out four.

In game two, Farmingdale State led 5-2 in the fourth before Mongiello doubled to center field which scored Anderson and put the Rams ahead by four.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles scored a pair of unearned runs to cut the deficit to 6-5.

In the final inning, junior designated hitter Melanie Boccio (Manorville, N.Y.) tied the game on a one out RBI single up the middle. In their next at-bat, freshman second baseman Gabrielle Cinquemani (West Islip, N.Y.) hit a walk-off RBI single to center to cap off the comeback and force a doubleheader split.

Anderson led the way for the Rams with three hits in four at-bats and three runs scored, while Mongiello was 2-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI.

Farmingdale State next will face Baruch in a non-conference road DH on Tuesday, April 8th at 3:30 p.m.
