Rams Drop NCAA Opener Despite Gem by Webb

Montclair, N.J. - The Farmingdale State softball team fell, 1-0, to #2 Susquehanna University (38-7) in their opening game of the double-elimination NCAA Division III Montclair Regional at the MSU Softball Stadium on Thursday night. Junior pitcher Taylor Webb (West Babylon, N.Y.) tossed a 4-hitter for the Rams (24-16) but earned the loss and dropped to 13-9 on the season.
In the top of the fifth, freshman catcher Meagan Anderson (Patchogue, N.Y.) hit a two-out double to centerfield. After junior shortstop Hillary Genova (Brentwood, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error, Susquehanna pitcher Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Penn.) forced an inning-ending ground out to strand two on base.
Junior catcher Brittany Devlin (Furlong, Penn.) reached base to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but was later thrown out by Anderson attempting to steal second. Freshman right fielder Amanda Neveroski (Toms River, N.J.) hit a two-out triple to right center, but Webb forced the final out to end the threat and keep the game tied 0-0.
In the top of the seventh inning, freshman designated hitter Meghan Acton (Lewittown, N.Y.) hit a one-out double to left field and advanced to third base on a Sam Johrden (Deer Park, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt. Freshman pitcher Ashley Cole (Carle Place, N.Y.), who entered in relief in the sixth, forced the inning-ending strikeout.
With two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, Susquehanna's Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario) dropped in a walk off two-out RBI single in centerfield to lead the Crusaders to a 1-0 victory.
The Rams will now face #6 Roger Williams (23-19) on Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
