Farmingdale, N.Y. - Farmingdale State posted two come from behind victories with 8-6 and 4-2 wins over visiting Mount Saint Mary College in conference softball action today in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in the Skyline, while the Knights fell to 5-9, 2-2.
Farmingdale State senior pitcher Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) hurled two complete games, as she struck out seven with seven hits in game one and allowed just two hits, striking out six in game two. Zino is now 6-3 overall with a 2.01 ERA.
The Rams trailed 3-0 until the fourth inning in game one, before they rallied and scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth. Senior left fielder Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y.) started the rally with a single to left center and would score on a single down the left field line by freshman designated player Michelle Mongiello (Elmont, N.Y.). Junior catcher Lauren Nelson (Levittown, N.Y.) scored Jen Jarczynski from third base on a bunt single for the second run of the inning.
With two outs and bases loaded, freshman shortstop Hillary Genova (Brentwood, N.Y.) hit a base-clearing double to center for the Rams to take the 5-3 lead. Junior third baseman Kristen Flint (Brentwood, N.Y.) singled up the middle to score Genova from second for the final run of the inning and a 6-3 Rams lead.
Farmingdale scored two more in the fifth and would hold on for the win as the Knights scored three runs in the seventh. Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) knocked a two RBI triple to left and one more would score, but the Rams held on for the 8-6 victory.
In game two, the Knights got on the board first with a two-run homer from Hepburn in the top of the second. The Rams tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple to right center by senior first baseman Aubrey Walker (West Babylon, N.Y.) and on a sacrifice fly out to first base by Jarczynski, catching the Knights off guard and allowing Walker to sneak home for the tying run.
In the fifth inning, Genova singled to right field to score freshman right fielder Sam Johrden (Deer Park, N.Y.) as the Rams took a 3-2 lead. In the sixth, Mongiello scored Walker on a single to center for the 4-2 advantage.
Zino forced 1-2-3 innings in the final two at-bats for the Knights, securing the 4-2 Farmingdale State win.
The Rams will now face St. Joseph's in a Skyline doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. at Martha Avenue Field in Bellport, N.Y.
