Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team, led by pitchers Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Heather Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y.), swept Merchant Marine in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 10-2 overall, while the Mariners fell to 0-8.

In game one, Zino was dominate striking out 13 of the 17 batters she faced and losing her bid for a no-hitter with two outs in the top of the fifth. The Rams scored three runs in the first inning, jumping out to an early lead over Merchant Marine. Farmingdale State added three runs in both the second and third innings, before tacking on two more in the fourth en route to an 11-0 victory.

Sophomore third baseman Kristen Flint (Brentwood, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in for the Rams. Senior shortstop Nicole Farber (Oakdale, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Juniors Amanda Maass (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Kaitlin Keenan (West Islip, N.Y.) each had two hits at the plate. Zino improved to 6-0 and lowered her ERA to 0.68 on the season.

In the second game, Merchant Marine plated a run in the top of the first as freshman left fielder Ashley Markey (Newark, Del.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Farmingdale State responded with five runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Leading 8-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Rams scored four runs, extending their lead to 12-2. Buckshaw didn't allow a hit in the top of the fifth as the Rams run ruled the Mariners and capped off the sweep.

Junior left fielder Madison Snyder (Medford, N.Y.) had two hits, three runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore right fielder Jennifer Jarczynski (West Babylon, N.Y.) was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Buckshaw picked up the win after allowing one earned run over five innings of work.

Farmingdale State next will host Staten Island in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 24th at 3:00 p.m.
