Rams Sweep Drew; Zino Remains Undefeated
Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State softball team improved to 19-3 overall as they swept the visiting Drew College Rangers today, 2-1 and 5-1, in a non-conference doubleheader. Freshman pitcher Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) remains undefeated with a 9-0 record, after striking out nine batters and allowing just three hits in game one. Sophomore Heather Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) pitched a victory in game two, striking out seven for her eighth win of the year (8-3).
Drew got on the board first in game one. Senior outfielder Katie Mulligan (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) struck out but reached first on a passed ball and was bunted over to second by senior left fielder Lauren Collini (Dallas, Pa./Dallas). After stealing third, Mulligan crossed the plate on a single to center field by sophomore first basemen Jillian Lusk (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains).
The Rams went ahead in the fifth inning, scoring the only two runs they would need for the win. Sophomore catcher Jess Dautner (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) reached on an error, followed by junior second baseman Lauren Poplawski's (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) infield single. Freshman center fielder Kaitlin Keenan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) sacrifice bunted to move the runners to second and third. Freshman left fielder Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) knocked the game-winning 2 RBI double through the left side for the 2-1 lead.
Drew made a run for the tie in the top of the seventh, leaving two runners on base, but a ground out to first base would end the inning and secure the victory for Zino.
In game two, Buckshaw pitched six scoreless innings, while Farmingdale went up 2-0 in the first, with freshman first baseman Aubrey Walker's (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) double to right field and an RBI walk by junior designated hitter Shannon Scudder (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur). The Rams added one more in the third with a solo homerun over the center field fence by sophomore shortstop Nicole Farber (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot). Poplawski scored freshman third baseman Amanda Maass (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) with a double to left field in the fourth inning and one more run in the sixth would give the Rams a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Drew scored their only run, but Buckshaw ended the game with a strikeout, a groundout to first and a groundout to herself.
The Rams will be away all weekend, playing two Skyline doubleheaders. They travel to Polytechnic on Saturday and Mount Saint Vincent on Sunday, both games start at Noon.
