2010 Softball Recap
Farmingdale, N.Y. - This year’s softball team posted a 34-11 record, while winning a first-ever ECAC Metro Region Championship and appearing in the Skyline Conference Finals for the second straight season. In the ECAC Championship, the Rams were seeded third and defeated #2 Richard Stockton 4-3, top-seed Ramapo, 3-2, and Richard Stockton, 2-0 in the Finals to claim the Title.
In the Skyline Championship, Farmingdale State defeated Mount Saint Mary in game one and fell to Polytech in game two, the girls won their way out of the losers bracket of the double-elimination playoffs and would have to defeat Poly twice to win Championship. The Rams won 11-0 to force the deciding game, but suffered a tough loss as they fell 8-7 in extra innings.
This year’s team, which is made up of all underclassmen and two juniors, posted the highest team batting average in school history (.362), the most hits in school history (438), scored the most runs in school history (350), and had the highest slugging percentage in school history (.567), due to the fact that they recorded 140 extra-base hits, including a school record 46 home runs.
The offense was led by junior shortstop Nicole Farber (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot), sophomore first baseman Aubrey Walker (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), sophomore center fielder Kaitlin Keenan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and sophomore left fielder Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), who combined for 34 home runs and were the top four offensively all season. Freshmen third baseman Kristen Flint (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwoo), catcher Jen Jarczynski (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), second baseman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood), outfielder Megan Kirchmeier (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and outfielder Liz Escobar (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) were all great additions to the lineup this season, all posting batting averages over .300.
The pitching duties were anchored by sophomore Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) with a 2.11 ERA and 140 strikeouts and junior Heather Buckshaw (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot). Buckshaw was named the ECAC Metro Tournament Most Outstanding Player and finished the year with 64 strikeouts and just 27 walks in her 89 innings pitched. They combined for 26 wins and 11 shutouts this season, while Zino threw her first collegiate no-hitter against NYU-Poly in game one of the Skyline Championship, the first no-hitter at Farmingdale since 2005. Freshman Lauren Fitzpatrick (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) went undefeated at 6-0 in her six starts for the Rams, while appearing in 12 games with a team-low 1.85 ERA.
The Rams received seven All-Conference selections this year and one All-Region selection. Nicole Farber was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Second Team All-Region team. Farber and Hope Zino were named Skyline Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season. Aubrey Walker and Kaitlin Keenan were named to the Skyline First Team and Maressa Mistretta, Kristen Flint and Rebecca Richman were named to the Skyline Second Team.
