Valiants Hold Off Late Rally to Defeat Rams in Season Opener
Manhattanville - 9, Farmingdale State - 7
Purchase, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse
team opened up their season against former Skyline opponent
Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. The Valiants and sophomore
Joey Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.), who tallied a career-high four
assists, held off a late rally to defeat the Rams by a score of 9-7
Wednesday at GoValiants.com Field.
The Valiants struck first as Hasbrouck fed Mike Strauss (Newak,
Del.) for a man-up goal midway through the first quarter. Hasbrouck
would find Strauss again with a man-up in the second quarter for
Strauss’ team-high fourth goal of the season. Despite finding
the back of the cage first, the Valiants found themselves down 3-2
after one quarter of action as the Rams scored two man-up goals of
their own. The goals came from junior Sean Maxwell (West Babylon,
N.Y./West Babylon) and freshman Eddie Rifice (Babylon,
N.Y./Babylon). Senior Jay Berndt (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) scored
the third goal with 42 seconds left in the quarter.
The second quarter was all Manhattanville as the Valiants
outshot Farmingdale 20-1 and put up five goals. Andrew McMillin
(Garden City, N.Y.) scored twice in the second to lead the
Manhattanville attack. Max Garofalo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored
his first of the year, and Lance Schulman (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) also
found the back of the cage to send Manhattanville into halftime up
7-4.
Sophomore Matt Hanley (Milton, Mass.) tallied the would-be
game-winner early in the third quarter firing a shot past Leone
unassisted. With a comfortable 8-4 lead, Farmingdale increased the
pressure and scored the next three goals, all even-strength, to
pull within one with 11:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. With 27
seconds remaining in the fourth, Schulman scored his second goal of
the game to give seal Manhattanville’s second straight
victory. Held without a goal in eight games last season, Schulman
now has three goals in two games to rank second on the team in
scoring.
Maxwell led the Rams with two goals for the night, along with Jo Stroessenreuther (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) with two goals and one assist. Senior Joe Meola (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored one goal and two assists. Junior Teddy Leone (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) finished with nine saves on 42 shots faced.
Farmingdale State will host Oswego in the home opener on Sunday, March 9th at 1:00 p.m.
