Merchant Marine Defeats Rams in Conference Match-Up
Apr 10, 2007

Kings Point, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's lacrosse program fell in a Skyline Conference game against Merchant Marine on Tuesday evening, 18-5, in Kings Point, N.Y.

Coming just three days after Sean Dougherty's record setting performance that catapulted him to become the United States Merchant Marine Academy All-Time Leading Goal Scorer, Dougherty learns that he was also named Skyline Conference player of the week for his 17 points to kick off the month of April. But on this evening against Farmingdale State, Dougherty's four points were overshadowed by the Mariners offensive effort in a huge win before the showdown in Hoboken, N.J. against the top ranked Steven's Ducks.

The Mariners (9-2, 6-0), proved in the games first eight minutes why they are a force to be reckoned with as they prepare for the Skyline Conference playoffs. Junior middy Ryan Merritt gave the fans something to cheer about as he whipped in the first goal of the game off of a Jim Flannery assist. Dougherty then responded with two goals of his own, including one that was fed to him by sophomore Brennan Dougherty. The Rams subsequently put together a pair of goals, one by Joe Meola and the other by Ryan LaFlare before Flannery netted a goal of his own to end the quarter at 4-2.

That would be the closest the Rams would get as the Mariners continued to pressure Farmingdale, striking them for 10 goals in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and dominating the Ram's in ground balls 56-27.

Senior Jim Flannery contributed a career day of his own, leading the Mariners with five goals and three assists on nine shot attempts (seven on goal). Brennan Dougherty finished with three goals and two assists. Ian Callery tallied one.

With the win, the Mariners improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Farmingdale State drops to 3-8 and 3-3 in the Skyline.
