Montclair, NJ - Sophomore attackman Bryan Klimchak (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) scored five times and Evan Wehmeyer (Succasunna, NJ/Pope John XXIII) added three goals as Montclair State defeated Farmingdale State 14-11 in Knickerbocker Conference Men's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Dave Armstrong (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) had two goals and four assists as the Red Hawks evened their record at 2-2 overall and in the Knickerbocker Conference. Ryan LaFlare (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) had five goals and one assist for the Rams, who fell to 0-3 and dropped their first KLC contest of the year.
The game was also a rematch of last year's ECAC Division III Metro Championship Game, a game won at Sprague Field by Montclair State, 13-8.
MSU roared out of the gate in the first period building an 8-1 lead. Armstrong score just over three minutes in and Klimchak's first tally boosted the lead to 2-0 with 10:36 to play in the period. Patrick Eustache (Queens, NY/Elmont) got a goal back for Farmingdale, however Klimchak scored twice in a 49-second span and Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ/Vernon) scored the first of his two goals to make the score 5-1 with 6:58 left. Wehmeyer extended the lead to five goals and A.J. Bachman's (Montville, NJ/Mountain Lakes) man-up goal with 3:45 to play made the score 7-1 before Meixner collected his second of the period with 3:18 left as the Red Hawks led 8-3 after one quarter.
In the second period, Farmingdale responded sparked by the play of goalkeeper Kevin Winters (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), who made seven saves in the period. Gianluca Carrabs (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) scored 56 seconds in and LaFlare and Jay Berndt (Brewster, NY/Brewster) had goals 30 seconds apart as Farmingdale cut the lead to 8-6 with 10:41 left. The Rams then trimmed the deficit to one as LaFlare recorded his second goal at 10:10 to make the score, 8-7. Bachman would end the Farmingdale spurt as he scored with 5:52 remaining as the Red Hawks led 9-7 at halftime.
In the second half, the teams traded goals in the first two minutes. Montclair State then scored three consecutive goals as Klimchak scored with 8:17 left and Wehmeyer's man-up tally at 5:21 boosted the lead to 12-8. Klimchak notched his final goal with 3:42 to go in the quarter giving MSU a 13-8 advantage heading into the final period.
Winters had 18 saves over the final three periods while starter Chris Hardgrove (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) made four stops in the opening period. Carrabs finished with two goals and Chris MCaleavey (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) had five ground balls and nine faceoff wins for the Rams.
Farmingdale State hosts Utica College on on Wednesday, March 15th at 3:30pm.
