Panthers Outlast Rams in Double OT

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team fell, 90-88, in double overtime as they hosted Old Westbury in their Skyline Conference opener this evening in Farmingdale, N.Y. Senior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who fouled out with 1:36 remaining in regulation, led the way for the Rams with 32 points and 23 rebounds.
Trailing 68-67 with 2:45 remaining in regulation, Matthews converted a layup to give Farmingdale State (2-2, 0-1) a one point lead. After an Old Westbury (3-1, 1-0) miss, Matthews was fouled and hit a pair at the line to give the Rams a 71-68 advantage with 2:03 left on the clock. A Panthers free-throw and Joshua Bailey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) layup with 34 seconds remaining tied the game at 71-71. The Rams missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the game headed to overtime.
In the first overtime, Old Westbury junior guard Tyrik Tucker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) broke the 76-76 tie as he connected on a 3-pointer off Rashawn McCarthy's (Westbury, N.Y.) pass. Farmingdale State forced a second overtime on a 3-point basket by senior guard Ryan Davis (Flushing, N.Y.) as Terence Henderson (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded the assist with 36 seconds remaining.
Old Westbury opened up an 88-84 lead in the second overtime before a pair of free-throw's by Davis pulled the Rams within two. On Old Westbury's next possession, Tucker converted 1-of-2 at the line to extend the lead to 89-86 with 48 seconds left to play. The Rams would again pull within one, but fell short 90-88.
Davis recorded 22 points, six boards, four steals and four assists, while senior guard Christian Nunez (White Plains, N.Y.) added 17 points and seven rebounds for Farmingdale State.
The Panthers were led by McCarthy who tallied 26 points, while Tucker scored 20 and had a team-leading six assists.
The Rams next will host NYU-Poly in a Skyline Conference game on Saturday, December 1st at 6:00 p.m.
