2011-12 Rams Basketball Preview
- Rams Looking Forward to Big Year -
Farmingdale, N.Y. - After finishing last season 16-10 overall with a tough double-overtime loss in the Skyline quarterfinals, the Rams have a packed squad featuring two All-Skyline players and some big newcomers to highlight an already flourishing roster in 2011-12.
Head coach Erik Smiles (139-58) will lead an experienced and talented squad for his eighth season and has high hopes for his team. Top returners this season include senior guard Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y.) and senior guard Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y.), while top players to watch include junior forward AJ Matthews (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior point guard Ryan Davis (Queens, N.Y.) and junior forward Darnell Chavis (New York, N.Y.).
Smith, a Second Team All-Conference selection, led Farmingdale State in scoring averaging 15.2 points per game and steals with 43. Smith also posted a team-high 74 assists and averaged over five rebounds a game from his guard position. Flournoy, who was also named Second Team All-Skyline, was second on the team in scoring (14.5 ppg) and led the team with 62 three-point field goals.
Newcomer AJ Matthews is a 7-foot transfer from Broward Community College, along with point guard Ryan Davis. The tandem played AAU ball for five years for Team Odom, before playing together again at Broward and now together again with the Rams. Matthews was selected as the 2010-11 All-Southern Conference Player of the Year and First Team after averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds. Davis was a Second Team All-Conference player his freshman year at Broward.
Forward Darnell Chavis, a transfer from Hostos Community College, was named Second Team All-Region XV last season with 18 points and seven rebounds per game. Chavis attended Vanguard High School.
The Rams open the season with their 1st Annual Courtyard by Marriott Tip-Off Tournament on November 18-19, playing host to Brockport State, Montclair State and John Jay. Brockport State and Montclair State will tip-off on Friday, Nov. 18th at 6:00 p.m., while Farmingdale State faces John Jay at 8:00 p.m. Games will be played on Saturday, Nov. 19th at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Baruch will visit the Rams' Walter A. Lynch Sports Center on Tuesday, November 22nd for a non-conference game at 8:00 p.m. The Rams then travel to Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. for a Thanksgiving Tournament on November 26-27, before opening their conference schedule on December 1st.
