Rams Take Third Place at Hampden-Sydney Tournament

Hampden-Sydney, VA - The Farmingdale State men's basketball team finished in third place at the Hampden-Sydney College Tournament this past weekend. The Rams fell in their opening round game 84-76 to Virginia-Wise, before defeating Methodist University in the consolation game.

In the game against Virginia-Wise (5-1), the Rams took a 35-32 lead into halftime. In the first half Farmingdale State was led by junior guards Joshua Smith (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) and Dyshaun Flournoy (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) who were each 3-for-6 from the floor, scoring eight and seven points respectively.

Virginia-Wise started the second half on a 21-6 run, taking a 53-41 lead with 14:43 remaining. The Rams answered with a 14-3 run of their own cutting the deficit to 57-56, as Flournoy hit three 3-pointers and made a layup during that span. Virginia-Wise scored the games next nine points to open up a ten point advantage with 7:37 to play. Farmingdale was not able to cut into the lead and eventually fell 84-76.

Flournoy led the way with a game-high 22 points for the Rams, while Smith added 14 points and four rebounds. Josh Jordan and Travis Berry each scored 16 for Virginia-Wise.

In the consolation game against Methodist (0-3), Flournoy broke a 30-30 tie with back-to back three-point baskets, putting Farmingdale State ahead 36-30 with 5:42 left in the first half. The Rams would take a 44-36 lead into halftime with Flournoy and Smith scoring all of the teams points over the final five minutes of the half.

Leading 70-67 with 6:09 remaining, senior guard John Dabney (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) stole the ball from Methodist's Josh Hayes, setting up a Flournoy layup. On Methodist's next possession, Smith forced another turnover and converted it into two points for the Rams, giving Farmingdale a 74-67 lead with less then five minutes to play. 

The Monarchs would cut the deficit to 84-81 after Travis Fulp hit a three-pointer with 54 seconds left on the clock. The Rams would convert on the offensive end on their final possessions, earning the 89-82 victory.

Smith had a team-high 22 points, while Dabney scored 21 after going 7-for-9 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Senior forward Jermaine Abraham (Brooklyn, N.Y./Wadleigh) shot 70 percent from the field, scoring 14 points and grabbing six boards.

Flournoy shot 6-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-7 from three-point range en route to 18 points. Flournoy was one of five players named to the All-Tournament team after finishing the tournament with 40 points (seven three-pointers), four steals and four rebounds.

The Monarchs were led by Mark Jernigan who scored a game-high 26 points.

Farmingdale State next will travel to Baruch for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, November 23rd at 7:30 p.m.
