Rams Advance to Elite 8 with win over Bridgewater

Pomona, N.J. – Farmingdale State (27-3)
advanced to the Sectional Finals of the 2009 NCAA Division III
Men's Basketball Championship tonight, as they defeated Bridgewater
State (22-7) at Richard Stockton College in Pomona, N.J. The Rams
held a five point lead at halftime and outscored the Bears 46-31 in
the second half to roll to the 84-64 victory in the Sectional
Semifinal on Friday night.
All five Farmingdale State starters scored in double digits with
junior guard Mike Campbell (Bronx, N.Y./Samuel Gompers) leading the
way with 24 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Daniel
Phillips (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) made 8-of-11 shots and finished
with 18 points.
For Bridgewater State, Rolan Millien (Sttoughton, Mass./Bridgeton
Academy) paced the team with a double-double, scoring 17 points and
grabbing 10 rebounds. The senior finished his Bears career with
1,160 points, good enough for 18th all time on the Bridgewater
State scoring list.
The Rams jumped out to an early 20-9 lead in the first nine
minutes of the game as senior guard Damien Santana (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Grady) made 3-of-4 shots including two three-pointers.
Farmingdale would continue to lead throughout the entire first
half, taking a 38-33 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, a 17-5 Rams spurt in the first seven minutes
extended the lead to 55-37. From that point on, Farmingdale’s
lead would not shrink below double-digits as the Rams cruised into
the Elite Eight for the first time in program history, while
carrying a school record 27 wins.
The Sweet Sixteen berth is the furthest Bridgewater State has ever
advanced in the NCAA Tournament. Also, their 22 victories is the
most in school history.
Farmingdale will face #6 Richard Stockton on Saturday night at
7:00 p.m. in the Stockton Sports Center.
