Dolphins Use Second Half Rally and Hold on to Defeat Rams
Staten Island – 79, Farmingdale State – 77
Farmingdale, N.Y. – After an eight point Rams lead at the half, the College of Staten Island (4-4) chipped away early in the second to overcome the deficit and even the score five minutes in. The entire second half featured seven lead changes and nine tied scores, with the Dolphins holding on for the final 79-77 victory. Farmingdale State fell to 4-4 overall with the loss.
Staten Island built up a seven point lead with 4:53 remaining in the game, before Ram’s junior guard Damien Santana (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grady) and junior forward Erastus Shannon (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) scored 10 unanswered points to give the Rams a three point edge with 2:56 on the clock.
A quick three-pointer by sophomore guard Kyle Yocum (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) would tie the game and a missed shot by the Rams gave Staten Island the ball. A successful jumper by sophomore guard Christian Montervino (Trenton, N.J./Ewing) gave the Dolphins the 74-72 edge with two minutes left and that would be the final lead of the game. Junior forward Sean Weisermuller (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) scored four of the final six points to keep Staten Island ahead. Weisermuller finished with 20 points, whil senior forward Gari Blackett (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn College Academy) had 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Yocum finished with 14 points.
For Farmingdale, junior forward Davon Jackson (New York, N.Y./Rice) led with 16 points, Shannon tallied 15 points and eight rebounds, Santana finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds and sophomore guard Merlin Bass (Queens, N.Y./Cardozo) chipped in with 10 points.
The Rams now host Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, December 15th in a non-conference double-header. The men’s game will be at 3:00 p.m., immediately following the women’s game at 1:00 p.m.
