Farmingdale State, 74
St. Joseph's, 72
Farmingdale, N.Y. - In a tie game with six seconds remaining, Farmingdale State sophomore guard Damien Santana (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grady) made two free throws for a 74-72 lead and the eventual victory in a Skyline Conference Quarterfinal victory over St. Joseph's (17-9) tonight in Farmingdale, N.Y. The Rams improved to 18-8 with the win and will now face top-seeded Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y. in the Skyline Semifinals on Thursday night, February 22nd, at 7:00 p.m.
Farmingdale held just a three point lead at the half, 38-35, while the second called for five ties and five lead changes. The Rams were up six points at 1:52, before St. Joe's senior guard Jorge Martinez (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) scored four points and junior forward Brandon Freeman (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) hit a jumper to tie the score with 31 seconds on the clock. Farmingdale quickly brought the ball down the court and set up a play for Santana, who was fouled under the basket and his two successful free throws would be enough after a last second jumper by St. Joe's was off the mark.
Both teams had four players in double figures. Santana led the Rams with 20 points and nine rebounds, followed by junior guard Peter Lipka (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) with 16 points and five assists. Junior forward Brian Robinson (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) finished with 11 points and senior guard Terry Menefee (Montgomery, Ala./Shawnee Mission North, Ks.) tallied 10 points and five assists.
St. Joseph's Martinez was the leader with 17 points, while sophomore guard David Acree (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) had 16 points and nine boards. Freeman posted 15 points and junior guard Phil Lipari (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) grabbed eight rebounds and had 14 points.
