Rams Fall in DH at Mount Saint Mary

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team was swept by Mount Saint Mary in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Knights earned a 6-5 win in the first game and tallied a 3-1 victory in game two.

In game one, Mount Saint Mary (7-6, 2-0) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first two innings. In the top of the third, senior center fielder Edward Bergmann (East Meadow, N.Y.) got the Rams on the board with an RBI sac fly to center and junior right fielder Michael Marino (Franklin Square, N.Y.) followed with an RBI triple to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Farmingdale State (12-7, 4-3) added a run in the seventh on a two out RBI groundout by freshman catcher Kevin de Castro (Bethpage, N.Y.), which scored Richard Sullivan (Farmingdale, N.Y.).

Trailing 6-3 in the final inning, the Rams scored two runs before Mount Saint Mary forced the final two outs to hold on for the 6-5 win.

Bergmann was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while freshman second baseman Andrew Karkota (Manorville, N.Y.) had two hits and scored a run.

Mount Saint Mary sophomore pitcher Brandon Lubrano (Mineola, N.Y.) earned the win after throwing a complete game allowing one earned run and striking out seven.

In the second game, the Knights again went ahead early scoring two runs in the first inning. The Rams cut the deficit in half the next inning after sophomore first baseman Brendan Sullivan (Plainview, N.Y.) hit an RBI single which scored Ryan Levine (West Babylon, N.Y.).

In the bottom of the second, the Knights increased the advantage to 3-1 scoring a run on a wild pitch.

Farmingdale State compiled only three hits the remainder of the game and dropped the second game of the doubleheader 3-1.

Sophomore pitcher Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway, N.Y.) recorded his first loss of the season (3-1) after allowing two earned runs in six innings of work.

Freshman Kevin Duffy (Wallingford, Conn.) went the distance giving up one run to capture his first win of the year.

The Rams next will travel to Division I Hofstra on Wednesday, April 9th at 3:00 p.m.
