- Dolce, Weingarten and Zilnicki Named D3baseball.com All-Region -
The 2013 D3baseball.com All-Region teams were announced on Monday, May 20th and three Rams earned a spot on the All-New York team. Senior outfielder David Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y.) was named to the First Team, junior pitcher Michael Dolce (St. James, N.Y.) was selected to the Second Team and freshman pitcher Alex Weingarten (East Rockaway, N.Y.) notched a spot on the Third Team.
For Zilnicki and Dolce, this is their second all-region award for 2013. Zilnicki is nationally ranked 2nd for on-base percentage, 3rd for stolen bases per game, 4th for stolen bases and 10th for batting average, while Dolce is currently leading the nation in earned run average.
Weingarten, who was also named Rookie of the Year along with his Third Team selection, finished with a 3-2 record in 18 appearances and three starts with a 2.47 ERA with one complete game and four saves. In the NCAA Regionals, he pitched 5.1 innings in two appearances, allowing just five hits and no earned runs with a two-inning save against Neumann.
Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools and conferences. The 2013 season is the second season these have been awarded, and more than 700 players were nominated. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region, as well as D3baseball.com staff and contributors.
For each of the eight regions, there is a regional player of the year (a batter), a pitcher of the year, a rookie of the year (must be a freshman) and a coach of the year.
