#1 Cortland State - 7, #4 Misericordia - 2
Farmingdale, N.Y. – Junior pitcher Ray Angelucci (Commack, N.Y.) improved to 11-1 after throwing a complete game allowing two runs and striking out eight as Cortland State defeated Misericordia 7-2 in the NCAA Division III Farmingdale Baseball Regional hosted by Farmingdale State College. The Red Dragons will play the winner of #2 Farmingdale State / #3 Ithaca tomorrow at noon.
Misericordia (36-10) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on a squeeze bunt by senior right fielder Jeff Slanovec (Easton, Pa.) which scored Mike Impellittiere (Cold Spring, N.Y.).
The Red Dragons (37-7-1) took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning as senior second baseman Matt June (Colonie, N.Y.) and junior third baseman Bryan Mistretta (Commack, N.Y.) scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Cortland State added a third run on a fielder's choice RBI by junior shortstop John Adornetto (Commack, N.Y.).
After a leadoff walk to begin the seventh, the Red Dragons increased their lead to 4-1 on an RBI triple down the right field line by junior designated hitter Andrew Pezzuto (Hastings, N.Y.). An RBI single to right by Adornetto in Cortland State's next at-bat put the Red Dragons ahead 5-1. Sophomore first baseman Max Rosing (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher P.J. Rinaldi (Bethel, Conn.) each added an RBI as Cortland State opened up a 7-1 advantage.
The Cougars would add one run in the bottom half of the seventh but fell 7-2.
The Red Dragons were led by Pezzuto who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Adornetto was 1-for-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI.
Slanovec was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI for the Cougars.
