Rams Split with NJCU in Season Opener

Farmingdale, N.Y. - The Farmingdale State baseball team opened the season today, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with New Jersey City University. The Rams fell 4-2 in game one and then took a 4-2 victory in the second game. Farmingdale and New Jersey City now both hold a 1-1 record and will head to Florida for Spring Break.
In the first game, the Rams went ahead 2-1 in the opening inning on a 2-RBI double by sophomore first basemen Kevin Curtis (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead). The Gothic Knights tied it up in the second and then added a run in the 5th and 7th to take the win. Junior pitcher Stephen Montalbano (North Brunswick, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) got the win for Jersey City going 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Farmingdale State senior right hander Tom Heeman (Valley Stream, N.Y./Hewlett) pitched 6 1/3 innings in defeat with six strikeouts.
A two-run fourth inning in game two would give the Rams a 3-2 edge, as freshman catcher Frank Scarlato (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) tripled to right field to score junior right fielder Frank Ennis (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and junior left fielder Donny Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Farmingdale added an insurance run in the sixth, scored by freshman pinch runner Ryan McAllister (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) and junior closer Billy Garofalo (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) came in to seal the victory, earning his first save of the season.
The Rams will travel to Disney's Wide World of Sports on Thursday, February 26th and will play seven games during their Spring Trip. They will face Clark (Mass.) on February 27th, Gwynedd Mercy (Pa.) on February 28th, Rose Hulman (Ind.) on March 1st and Point Park (Pa.) on March 2nd.
