Auburn, N.Y. – Trailing by five runs
through six innings, second-ranked St. John Fisher College rallied
for six runs in the final three innings, scoring the tying and
winning runs in the top of the ninth inning, while senior reliever
Geoff Martone (GILBERT, AZ/Hamilton) retired three of the final
four batters in the bottom half of the inning, striking out the
final batter with a full count and the tying run on third base, to
come away with an 8-7 victory over sixth seeded Farmingdale State
College in a winner's bracket contest in the 2010 NCAA
Division III Championship Auburn Regional at Falcon Park.
The victory for the Cardinals (30-12) sets up a showdown of the
top two seeded teams, facing top seed SUNY Cortland (34-8-1) on
Friday, May 21 at 4:30 pm. Both teams are unbeaten in tournament
play with 2-0 records. Farmingdale State (25-16) will face
Castleton State College in an elimination game at 1:15
pm.
Farmingdale chased Fisher starter Mike Craig (GETZVILLE, NY/St.
Joseph's) in the third inning with five runs on six hits,
highlighted with run scoring singles from freshman third baseman
David Zilinicki (RIVERHEAD, NY/Riverhead) and senior designated
hitter Mike Labrozzi* (SAG HARBOR, NY/Pierson) and RBI doubles by
junior right fielder Ron Rubenstein (DEER PARK, NY/St.
Anthony's) and junior first baseman Kevin Curtis* (RIVERHEAD,
NY/Riverhead). The Rams added runs in the fifth and sixth before
Fisher pulled Craig, who pitched five and a third innings with 10
hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Fisher started its comeback with a run in the seventh, three runs
in the seventh, and two in the ninth, while junior Adam Pettinella
(BATAVIA, NY/Batavia) and freshman Aaron Benton (GOWANDA,
NY/Gowanda) held Farmingdale scoreless through two and two-thirds
innings, yielding only three hits and a walk while striking out a
batter each.
The Cardinals opened the ninth by putting runners on base with a
single by junior centerfielder Ross Langevin (LIVERPOOL,
NY/Liverpool) and freshman second baseman Ben Bostick (ROCHESTER,
NY/Aquinas Institute) reaching on a fielding error, moving Langevin
to third. Senior first baseman Jon Gibbs (PITTSFORD NY/Pittsford
Sutherland) brought in Langevin with the tying run on a sacrifice
fly, followed by junior catcher Leo Fusilli (PENFIELD, NY/McQuaid
Jesuit) driving in Bostick with the go ahead run on an RBI
single.
Fusilli finished the game batting 3-for-5, scoring twice with the
RBI, while Langevin (run, RBI), sophomore designated hitter Teagen
Barresi (LANSNG, NY/Lansing), and junior right fielder Phil
Pettinella (BATAVIA, NY/Batavia) registered a pair of hits apiece
as the Cardinals tallied 11 runs.
Farmingdale opened the bottom half of the inning with a fly out to
centerfield before centerfielder Frank Yera (MANHATTAN, NY/Grand
Street Camous) got on base with a single to third base and reached
second on a wild pitch. Martone struck out Labrozzi and put Yera in
scoring position at third with a wild pitch before striking out
Curtis to end the rally, picking up his second save of the
tournament and seventh of the season. Benton was credited for the
victory (2-0), tossing two innings with one hit and a strikeout in
facing five batters.
Yera was the top hitter for the Rams, going 3-for-3 with a run
scored and an RBI, while Rubenstein (run, two RBI), Curtis (RBI)
and Junior second baseman Gilbran Bracamonte (BRONX, NY/Grand
Street Campus, run) each registered a pair of hits for Farmingdale,
who accumulated a game-high 14 hits, but committed seven errors
(five coming in the final three innings).
