2011-12 Farmingdale State Athletics Banquet Highlights

- Cerverizzo and Matthews Named FSC Athletes of the Year -


Farmingdale, N.Y. – The 2011-12 Farmingdale State College Athletic Banquet was held at the Huntington Hilton in Melville, N.Y. on Tuesday, May 1st, 2012. The banquet hosted over 250 student-athletes, fans and friends of Farmingdale State Athletics, who were excited to recap all of the team and individual accomplishments throughout the year. The featured awards included the Alumni Association Male and Female Athlete of the Year, the Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Awards, the President's Award (for outstanding team), the Provost Award (for highest team GPA) and the Gerry Allard Service Award.

 

 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

 Each year the Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Athletic Department administration, choose a male and female athlete of the year, who have achieved excellence within their sport(s). This year's recipients were Miss Katrina Cerverizzo and Mr. AJ Matthews.

Female Athlete of the Year

The 2011-12 Alumni Association Female Athlete of the Year, Katrina Cerverizzo, was a four-year starter on the women’s soccer team and also played one season on the women’s basketball team.

Freshman year, she was named Second Team All-Skyline after leading the team in goals and points and finishing 4th in the Conference in scoring. She helped her team capture their 2nd straight Skyline Championship.

Her sophomore season, she was named Third Team All-Region and Second Team All-Skyline after finishing 2nd on the team in scoring and 3rd in points. In the conference, she finished 9th for goals scored and 5th for game-winning goals. She helped the Rams in capturing their 3rd straight Skyline Championship.

Junior year, she was named Second Team All-Region and First Team All-Skyline, after finishing third on the team with seven assists, while also scoring two goals from her defensive midfielder position. She was named the Skyline Tournament MVP as she scored the game-winning goal in the Rams 1-0 victory over Mount Saint Mary, as the Rams claimed their 4th straight Skyline Championship.

This past season, she was named a Team Captain and was selected First Team All-Region, Second Team All-ECAC and First Team All-Skyline. She led the team with 12 goals and tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals. Her team won their 5th straight Skyline Conference Championship.

She leaves Farmingdale State as the All-time career leader in points, goals, game-winning goals, shots attempted, shots on goal, penalty kicks made, games started and minutes played.

She will be graduating next weekend with a degree in Criminal Justice and currently has a cumulative grade point average of 3.31.

Male Athlete of the Year

The 2011-12 Alumni Association Male Athlete of the Year, AJ Matthews, was a junior on our men’s basketball team.

He came to us from Broward Community College, where he was named the All-Southern Conference Player of the Year and continued his success here with the Rams, as he led our team to their first Skyline Championship since 2008.

He was named a First Team All-American, the first in school history, and received five Player of the Year awards. He was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Year, the D3Hoops.com Atlantic Region Player of the Year, the ECAC Metro Region Player of the Year, the Metropolitan Basketball Writer’s Division III Player of the Year and the NABC Division III Atlantic Region Player of the Year.

This season he averaged 22.4 points, 16.3 rebounds and 3.7 blocks with a .614 field goal percentage. 

He led the Nation in double-doubles and rebounding, while ranking 3rd for blocks per game, 11th for points and 12th for field goal percentage. He became the school’s All-Time leader for Career Blocks in just one year, shattering the school record for blocks in a season by 60, as he blocked 99 shots.

He also broke school records for rebounds in a game (29), blocks in a game (9), points in a season (605), field goals in a season (239) and rebounds in a season (439).

In the Skyline Conference, he was named the Skyline Player of the Week 9 out of 13 weeks and led the conference in scoring, rebounding, block and defensive rebounds.

He currently holds 10 single-season school records and six All-time records.

 
PRESIDENT’S AWARD

The President’s Award is given from the preceding year's performance, so all teams are allowed to finish their respective season. The award for best overall team performance in 2010-11 was the Men's Tennis Team, who won their first-ever Skyline Championship in 2011. They defeated Marywood, 5-3, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to Williams College in the second round and posting a program-best record of 12-6. This season, they won their second straight conference title.

 

TEAM ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Each year one team receives the Team Achievement Award, which is the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. For the 2011-12 academic year, the Team Achievement Award went to the Women's Soccer Team with a cumulative 3.12 GPA.

 

 
CHANCELLOR'S SCHOLAR-ATHLETES

Also this year, four student-athletes received the 2012 Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award from the State University of New York.

The Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award was created to recognize outstanding academic excellence and outstanding athletic achievement. Recipients were selected after a thorough review of their credentials and accomplishments by athletic directors from across the State University System.

This year's winners from Farmingdale State were: Mike Jang (Track, 3.43 GPA), Ryan McAllister (Baseball, 3.44 GPA), Jessica Sickles (Tennis, 3.66 GPA) and Sean Tiernan (Cross Country/Track, 3.74 GPA),
